Wheelchair Seating and Positioning Clinic
-
-
The
Wheelchair Seating and Positioning Clinic through Winchester
Rehabilitation Center assists primary wheelchair users to achieve
optimum independence, positioning, and comfort in the use of their
wheelchair and seating system. These can include: manual
wheelchairs, power/electric wheelchairs, scooters, back systems,
and seat systems.
-
-
Seating and Positioning
- A patient
evaluation is performed to determine what type of wheelchair may
be appropriate. Recommendations are made based on the best way to
maximize function, as well as accommodate for any structural
abnormalities.
-
-
Vendors
- Different
equipment vendors are available and may participate in the
evaluation process. Selection of equipment is based on results of
the evaluation, recommendations of the therapist(s), preference of
the individual, and insurance coverage.
-
-
Individuals who have any of the following conditions may need an
evaluation:
- a decline in
physical abilities; no longer able to walk independently with or
without an assistive device
- increased
pressure or skin breakdown in current wheelchair
- difficulty
maneuvering current wheelchair
- limit
activities due to seating discomfort
- difficulty
completing self-care or other daily activities due to current
wheelchair
- pain, or
paresthesia (change in sensation) during wheelchair use
- physical
change that does not allow a comfortable fit in the current
wheelchair
- How to Get
Started
-
Individuals wanting more information regarding an assessment for a
wheelchair or seating system, should contact their physician,
physical therapist or occupational therapist. A physician’s
prescription for a wheelchair evaluation is required.
