Speech/Language Pathology

The Winchester Rehabilitation Center’s Speech/Language Pathology Department provides diagnostic, therapeutic, counseling, educational and referral services for patients who display communication or swallowing disorders due to disease, dysfunction or trauma. These services are delivered to acute care inpatients, outpatients, home health and Day Program patients. Speech/language pathologists diagnose and treat all aspects of speech/language disorders as well as a variety of swallowing problems.

Speech and language pathologists conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine treatment goals. The treatment process focuses on the areas of deficits. This includes patient and family education, training and home program development to further optimize the patient’s recovery. Specialized swallowing evaluations are also available at Winchester Medical Center. The “Cookie Swallow” (also know as videofluroscopic or modified barium swallow study) is a moving video x-ray. This special study is used to assess a patient’s ability to chew and swallow food and liquids safely. Information gained from this study may include risk for aspiration (passage of material into lungs vs. stomach), diet consistency and compensatory techniques.
