Low Vision Rehab Services
Low Vision Rehabilitation at Winchester Rehabilitation Center increases independence for individuals with visual impairments through the use of low vision devices, adaptive techniques and training.  Patients benefiting from low vision rehabilitation have macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, a neurological injury or other visual impairments.
 
Services
Occupational therapists provide training with scotoma awareness, all types of magnification, low vision devices and adaptive techniques to perform daily activities such as reading, paying bills, or taking medication.  Vision rehabilitation can be done in a patient’s home or at the office.  Winchester Rehabilitation Center provides home evaluations for lighting and environmental modifications to increase safety and independence.
 
Low Vision Diagnosis
Patients with low vision may:  
  • be unable to read the newspaper
  • be unable to set the dial on an oven or microwave
  • over pour or spill liquid when filling a glass
  • be unable to identify medicine in the bottle
  • have difficulty looking up phone numbers and dialing the phone
  • have double vision when reading or looking in distance
  • have difficulty signing their name or reading their own writing
  • be sensitive to glare indoors or outdoors
  • have difficulty seeing curbs or steps
  • have decreased field of vision
How to Get Started
A physician’s referral is required for all services through Winchester Rehabilitation Center. To make an appointment call 540-536-5130.  Vision Rehabilitation is covered under Medicare, and many insurance companies will reimburse the cost of this service.
