DriveAbility
-
DriveAbility
is Winchester Rehabilitation Center’s adaptive driving program
designed to assist people to drive again following an illness,
injury or a physically limiting condition.
-
- Patients in
the DriveAbility program receive a pre-driving assessment by a
registered occupational therapist. This assessment will allow the
therapist to obtain information on a patient’s medical history,
functional abilities, thinking skills, visual perception and
reaction time. Based on the outcome of the pre-driving assessment
and the individual’s driving goals, an on-the-road evaluation is
initiated in cooperation with Green Apple Driving School.
-
- Both the
occupational therapist and certified driving instructor evaluate
the individual’s driving skill and functional mobility. The
training vehicle is equipped with instructor brake and adaptive
equipment, such as hand controls, left accelerator pedal, steering
devices and adaptive turn signals to accommodate each person’s
individual needs.
-
- DriveAbility
can also assist with licensing needs, obtaining equipment and
vehicle vendors.

How to Get
Started
- Anyone
wanting to participate in the DriveAbility program should consult
his / her physician to obtain a referral. Please bring a signed
referral form to the first appointment. Many insurance companies
will reimburse the cost of this service, so patients are asked to
have insurance information handy when the appointment is made.
