Electroencephalography (EEG Testing)

What happens during the test?

You will be fitted with a skull cap with several electrodes weaved into the cap. The electrodes will be placed strategically on your head in order to get proper testing for various areas of your brain.  A small amount of gel will be placed under each electrode as a conductive.  After the skullcap is in place you will lie face up on a bed while the technician hooks you up to a transmitting machine. The test will start while your lying on the bed.  The technician will ask you to open or shut your eyes at different stages of the test.  There are different stages of the test.  When the test is over the cap will be removed and you are free to go home.

Will it hurt?

No. The Skull Cap will place snuggly on your head, which might cause some discomfort but no pain.

What do I do to prepare?

We request that you come to testing with clean hair.

How long will it take?

The whole process should take about 1 hour.

What is the reason for this test?

The test is a useful diagnostic procedure to determine the presence of disease or abnormalities in the function of the brain.  Many disorders and conditions of the brain produce changes in the activity of the brain cells. The EEG may detect this activity.
