Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)

What happens during the test?

You will be taking breaths through a mouthpiece, some of these will be big breaths and you will be blowing the air out as fast as you can. Others will be slow and easy. There are four tests, each with a slightly different sequence of breathing maneuvers.

Will it hurt?

No. Some people get "light headed" when they take some of the deep breaths, but there is no painful procedure involved.

What do I do to prepare?

Do not take any of your bronchodilators for two hours prior to the test unless you feel that you need to. Do not eat a large meal just before the test.

How long will it take?

A complete PFT takes approximately ½ hour.

What is the reason for the test?

A pulmonary function test is done to help with the diagnosis of various lung diseases and to find reasons for previously unexplained shortness-of-breath, or cough. It can also be done to track potential pulmonary side effects that may be associated with some medications.
