Student Opportunities
 
Students studying physical and occupational therapy have the opportunity to complete their clinical rotations at Winchester Medical Center. Outpatient services including Orthopedic Spine and Sports Physical Therapy, therapeutic exercise and treatment, occupational /hand therapy, and mechanical based diagnosis and treatment using the McKenzie approach are available on the Amherst Campus. Students in this training program will work one-on-one with board-certified specialists in orthopedics and internationally credentialed spine care professionals.
 
Students studying Orthopedic Spine and Sports Physical Therapy will:
  • assist in the treatment of sports related injuries, extremity and spinal injuries, and post-op surgery patients.
  • use mechanical based diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders with an emphasis on the spine using the McKenzie approach.
  • attend sport-specific clinics with video motion analysis for runners and baseball pitchers.
  • inclusion of selected multiple manual therapy techniques in support of mechanical based plan of care
 
Students studying Occupational/ Hand Therapy will:
·         assist in the orthopedic diagnoses for the fingers, wrist and hand including carpal tunnel and tendon damage
·         learn splinting for finger, hand, and wrist impairments 
·         practice Lymph edema treatments including massage, wrapping, and management
·         give ergonomic and functional capacity evaluations                               
 
Upon admittance to the program students must:
  • complete a background check
  • receive appropriate vaccinations (including 2 rounds of MMR )
  • test negative for TB
  • have a history of Chicken Pox or + titer
  • be CPR certified
  • provide a copy of liability coverage
 
Student Requirements
Upon completion of the program, students are required to give an in-service to the outpatient rehabilitation staff on a focus of their training.
