Ways to Help
The Endoscopy Center

The Endoscopy Center at Winchester Medical Center is a modern, multifunctional unit offering gastrointestinal endoscopy, intravenous medication and blood product infusion, and minor surgical and medical procedures. A dedicated staff of registered nurses with competency based training assist in the specialty practice of gastroenterology endoscopy.

Services Include
GI Endoscopy: colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, ERCP, sigmoidoscopy bronchosopy minor surgery

Minor medical procedures: ESI, manometry, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and liver biopsy; infusion services including blood transfusions and other IV infusions

GI Endoscopy and Bronchosopy
Patients receiving sedation should plan to be at the hospital for about three hours for a GI Endoscopy procedure. A video of the GI endoscopy procedure will be offered for viewing prior to the procedure. A Sigmoidoscopy may not require sedation and should last approximately one hour. A bronshoscopy will take about four hours from admission to discharge.

Minor Surgical and Medical Procedures
Minor surgical and medical procedures should last about one hour. Patients will be asked to arrange alternate transportation for procedures that affect vision or impair walking ability.

Infusion Therapy
Blood transfusions take up to two hours per unit of blood. Patients receiving 2 units of blood should plan on a four-hour treatment. During treatment, reclining chairs will be offered to patients for their comfort.

Parking and Registration
Patients and visitors of the Endoscopy Center should park in the MOB II parking lot (near the parking deck) or in the garage on Level 1. Enter through the office building entrance. From the main hall, the Endoscopy Center is located on the right. Due to limited space, one adult may accompany each patient.

Medical History
Physicians may request a patient’s medical history.  It is necessary for patients to accurately complete the form with special attention to allergies and the type(s) of medication taken daily (including blood thinners). All forms should be taken to the Endoscopy Center on the day of the procedure.

Procedures Requiring Sedation
Patients receiving sedation will be required to arrange alternate transportation. Patients will not be discharged until a driver is present. Procedure may be cancelled if patient is unable to provide transportation. Procedures can range anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour. Drivers should be present at the time of discharge.

Preparation for Procedures
Physicians may give the following orders:
  •  Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before the procedure. Patients may be instructed to take morning medications with a sip of water.
  • Follow the instructions for the bowel prep. Some preps require a laxative or enema early in the morning before coming to the hospital. Patients who are unable to take the prep should contact their physician.
