request for information. Team members provide assistance
with evaluations and referrals from area professionals
and the public, as well as facilitating admissions

Adult Inpatient Services
The adult inpatient program provides evaluation, treatment
and discharge coordination in a case managed setting
for individuals 18 years and older. Services are provided
for those with primary, acute and/or chronic psychiatric
illnesses and/or substance abuse. Each patient’s
treatment is individualized and coordinated by a multidisciplinary
treatment team composed of the psychiatrist, psychiatric
social worker, therapist, nurse case manager, activity
therapist, and registered nurses, who provide direct
care for patients. Treatment options include individual,
family, and group modalities, pharmacotherapy, electrotherapy,
behavior modification, and activity, music, and message

use, as well as discharge planning and coordination,
are important aspects of treatment planning. Families,
supportive living personnel and significant others
often participate in formal and informal discharge
planning sessions, individualized medication education,
and arrangements for the continuation of treatment
following discharge.
Apple Wood—Older
Adult Services
Apple Wood at Winchester Medical Center specializes
in the assessment, inpatient hospitalization, and on-going
community consultative follow-up of older persons with
acute mental health problems. Typical patients include
those with long-standing or newly diagnosed psychiatric
disorders, as well as patients with disorders that
generally have their onset in older age, such as dementia
or Alzheimer’s-related diseases. Though “Senior” traditionally
refers to those over age 65, younger individuals who
develop early onset progressive dementia are also served
within the program. Apple Wood is a short-term, acute
care program with an average length of stay of 7 to
10 days. A supportive environment is provided, encouraging
older adults to reach their highest level of independence.
Treatment is provided using a team approach involving
psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, clinical social
workers, recreation and activity therapists, pharmacists,
and other patients support persons as needed.
Adult Partial Hospital Program
The partial hospital program operates weekdays between
the hours of 8:30 am and 4:00 pm. The program provides
a structured, active, group treatment program for individuals,
ages 18 and over, with psychiatric, emotional and behavioral
disorders. Individuals must have good support at home
during evening, night, weekend and holiday hours. Each
client is evaluated and treated by a team of mental
health professionals, led by a psychiatrist. In addition
to the therapeutic groups, treatment options may include
individual or family therapies, pharmacotherapy, medication
and disease management education, and discharge planning
with coordination for follow-up services. Therapies
are provided by a professional licensed at the master’s
level, with psychiatrists reviewing patient treatment
on a daily basis. The program is staffed by an experienced
registered nurse, who assists patients with medication
and safety needs, assuring timely communication among
those providing program services. The program is located
in the Behavioral Health Pavilion with a direct entrance
from the parking lot. The program can provides services
for up to eight patients per day.
Adult Intensive Outpatient Program
The intensive outpatient program operates daily during
weekdays. Patients are scheduled for three or four
hour sessions on two to three days of the week according
to individual needs. Adult intensive outpatient services
are designed to serve adults ages 18 and older, with
significant impairment from psychiatric, emotional
and behavioral disorders. It is designed for those
individuals who can benefit from brief, intensive,
solution focused therapy aimed at achieving specific
goals. Patients receive an assessment, which includes
evaluation by the team psychiatrist as well as other
multidisciplinary staff. Specific goals and objectives
are then set with the patient, and a plan is designed
to meet those objectives, with an expected discharge
date established. Each patient is admitted under the
care of a psychiatrist, who leads the treatment team
for that patient. Medication may be prescribed through
this program. The major portion of the program consists
of psychotherapy and coping skills groups, though individual
and family therapies are scheduled as needed.

Treatment
for Eating Disorders
The spectrum of eating disorders
includes Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and
Binge Eating Disorder. VBHA offers individual
psychotherapy and couples/family psychotherapy
to address underlying emotional issues, and
family dynamics. Also available is group
therapy, a particularly helpful modality, to
reduce social isolation, and to offer peer based
learning and support. Since the treatment of
eating disorder often requires a coordinated
professional team approach, clients may be asked
to work with a physician and registered
dietician as well. In this way, the
psychological, medical, and nutritional aspects
of the illness will be specifically targeted.
