Premier Award for Quality Recognizes Care &
Operational Efficiency
Winchester
Medical Center is a 2005 winner of the
prestigious Premier Award for Quality in the
area of acute myocardial infarction (heart
attack). This nationally-recognized award honors
clinical excellence in both quality of care and
operational efficiency, differentiating its
winners as industry leaders that deliver
outstanding patient care while reducing the cost
of healthcare by improving resource utilization.
Premier, Inc.,
is a strategic healthcare alliance that provides
an array of performance solutions to hospitals
and other providers. The Premier Award for
Quality, given in five clinical areas and based
on quality and cost data regularly submitted to
Premier for reporting and benchmarking purposes,
is distinguished by its consideration of
performance-based criteria including clinical
quality outcomes, clinical process indicators
and resource utilization outcomes. Performance
within each area is given equal weight.
“The
physicians, staff and leaders associated with
heart and vascular services at Winchester
Medical Center seek better ways to improve
patient care each and every day,” notes Jim
Woodward, Winchester Medical Center President.
“This award recognizes our success in developing
more efficient ways of delivering care, as well
as our ongoing commitment to quality patient
care.”
Clinical areas
considered for the 2005 Premier Award for
Quality are acute myocardial infarction, total
joint replacement of the hip and/or knee,
coronary artery bypass graft, heart failure, and
community acquired pneumonia. Only three winners
were picked in each category for each hospital
type from an eligible pool of nearly 400 Premier
hospitals. Hospitals that submitted data to
Premier’s Perspective™ clinical comparative
database (the largest clinical comparative
database in the nation) between July 2003 and
July 2004 were eligible to participate in the
2005 Premier award program. Winchester Medical
Center is the only hospital in Virginia to earn
a Premier quality award this year.
"This award
recognizes the contributions of the
cardiologists, internal medicine and emergency
physicians, who, together with nursing and
support staff, have collaborated to provide
state-of-the-art treatment for heart attack at
Winchester Medical Center,” says Neal Gaither,
MD, Chair, Division of Cardiology at Winchester
Medical Center. “The hospital and its dedicated
cardiac staff have provided advanced care for a
multitude of cardiac ailments for over 25
years."
Heart and
Vascular Center Executive Director Joseph De
Leon adds, “The Heart & Vascular Center is
committed to continuous improvement in patient
care and has dedicated resources to routinely
review clinical outcomes in both cardiology and
cardiovascular surgery.”
Winchester
Medical Center initiated its cardiology program
with the opening of the first heart
catheterization lab in 1980, and performed its
first heart surgery in 1984.
