Making the Grade
HealthGrades Ranks WMC Among Nations Best

Winchester Medical Center has received the 2005 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from HealthGrades, a national quality ratings firm with a long history of analyzing the quality of care at more than 5,000 hospitals across the country. The Distinguished Hospital Award signifies that WMC has placed among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for clinical performance. WMC is just one of 229 hospitals nation wide to earn this honor for 2005.

In determining its Distinguished Hospital recipients, HealthGrades assessed national outcomes data collected on all hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) from 2000 to 2002. As part of its Quality and Clinical Excellence Study, HealthGrades examined death and complication rates of Medicare patients in 28 common procedures and diagnoses ranging from joint replacements to bypass surgery.

Along with its Distinguished Hospital Award, HealthGrades also issues annual Hospital Report Cards, which objectively rate the performance of almost every hospital in the U.S. that has programs in cardiology, orthopedics, neurosciences, pulmonary, vascular surgery, and obstetrics. After putting the data through a rigorous statistical analysis that is adjusted for risk (meaning that it takes into account variations of the patient population cared for by different hospitals), HealthGrades rates hospitals with a five-star system. Top-rated hospitals that perform significantly better receive five stars; hospitals with average performance are given three stars; and one star is given to hospitals with poor performance.

“It is indeed an honor to be counted among the nation’s best in so many specialties,” observes WMC President Jim Woodward. “This official recognition of our work and the level of service we provide is something in which we all can take great pride,” he adds.

In addition to ranking among the top five percent for overall clinical performance, WMC’s 2005 report card also boasts:
