There are many volunteer opportunities at Winchester Medical Center. More than 700 individuals volunteer their time at the hospital, donating more than 75,000 hours each year. Volunteers are unique, wonderful people who care for each other as well as for the patients and families they help. Today, we invite you to join this team and use your special skills, knowledge and time to touch the lives of your neighbors. Volunteers - young and old, employed and retired, men and women - offer the precious gift of time in a variety of ways.

In-Hospital Volunteers may be a courtesy van driver, Surgical/Critical Care waiting room liaison, patient representative, patient escort, clerical volunteer, or work in the Child Care Center, Emergency Department, at the Information Desk or deliver mail and flowers to patients.

Winchester Medical Center Auxiliary was founded on November 6, 1902 when 100 ladies from the community met in the Rouss Engine Room of the Rouss Fire Company. The object of the Auxiliary today is the same as then: to serve as an extension of Winchester Medical Center in the promotion and improvement of the general health of the community through education, service, and goodwill. This year through projects such as the Gift shops, the Auxiliary Attic, Light of Love, and the Follies, the Auxiliary was able to raise $225,000 to support on-going hospital projects. The Memorial Fund gave an additional $45,500 in the form of scholarships in support of healthcare education. This year the Auxiliary begins a new project, the Hurst Hospitality House, which is scheduled to open Spring of 2006.

The Auxiliary Attic offers items in good condition for resale at reasonable prices. Over the years, thrift shops have gained increased popularity as a viable shopping choice, not only because recycling items is good for the environment, but also because there are always tremendous bargains to be had. The Auxiliary Attic accepts donations of clean, gently-used items including clothing, shoes, small appliances, housewares, knickknacks, small furniture items, books, toys, and much more. The store is located in the Northside Station Shopping Plaza, 809 North Loudoun Street, Winchester, VA. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For more information, call the store at (540) 536-0000.

Auxiliary Follies
This annual musical revue showcases local talent to raise money for Auxiliary projects. Directed by a professional production company, the Follies has entertained the community for more than 40 years. Volunteers assist with every aspect of the show, including advertising, set construction, costumes, and much more. Performances are held in March each year at Shenandoah University’s Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre in Winchester. Next years' Follies will kick-off Tuesday, February 21 at 7:00pm. Performances will take place on March 16, 17, and 18.

Helping Hands
Helping Hands volunteers offer assistance to patients and families who have been in an accident or have become ill while traveling in the area. Helping Hands volunteers make overnight arrangements, provide transportation to airports and motels, arrange short-term childcare, care for pets, and provide comfort, support and any other assistance to family members. Call 540-539-4008 for more information.

William the Cat
This program offers school children in grades K through second the opportunity to learn what it would be like to be a patient in the hospital.
